A unique opportunity: Remote island care in rural Orkney
Monday to Friday, 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. 26 weeks a year only. Competitive Salary
Dounby Surgery lies in beautiful Orkney, in the West Mainland. It is a farming community, with low lying lochs and small rolling hills. The landscape is dotted with neolithic sites and the world heritage sites Ring of Brodgar and Skaill are on our doorstep.
The practice has approximately 3,100 people. The main surgery is in new premises in Dounby but we also look after a branch surgery in Rousay, an island to the north. We travel there 2-3 times a week by ferry and and offer some surgeries virtually.
The surgery is GMS and there is no out-of-hours commitment. We are 2 partners and a salaried doctor. As a training practice we accommodate GPSTs and also ScotGEM students.
There are 2 practice nurses and 2 nurse practitioners. In addition, there is a community link worker and pharmacist attached to the organisation.
Dounby Surgery is quite unique. Not least the work we do on the Northern Isles, but also that we provide Dermatology and Phototherapy services to the entire Orkney population.
Nevertheless, we view ourselves as a traditional practice. We know our patients and their families. The surgery occupies an important part of the local community and we feel valued in the work we do.

The last ten years....
At Dounby Surgery we do not like to stand still. Over the last decade we have reorganised and reshaped the care that we provide.
In 2011 the surgery had to close its dispensary. This was a source of income and stability for the practice and was a significant setback for the whole team.
Nevertheless, since that time we have pushed ahead with a new agenda and new challenges. We became a training practice in 2013 and now host GP specialty trainees. 2 years ago our GPST won trainee of the year based at Dounby.
Another ambition was to be involved more in remote island care. We made a bid and were successful in providing GP care to Rousay, Wyre and Egilsay - islands to the north of Orkney mainland.
A further development was that of phototherapy; Orkney was the last health board in the country to offer this simple skin treatment. This is now delivered by 3 trained phototherapy nurses at the surgery. Finally we took on dermatology services, together with the Dermatology department at NHS Tayside.
We are looking for a new GP.

Perhaps you have significant experience in general practice? If so, you may feel that you can help guide us over the next few years with contract changes, PCIP and IT re-provisioning
You could be someone who enjoys dermatology. Perhaps you already have a career in dermatology but would like to combine this with rural general practice. Dounby Surgery is an ideal place to do this.
We are also interested in hearing from new GPs. Dounby Surgery is, at heart, a traditional practice and this may be somewhere you could lay down roots and build your career. We are a supportive group, experienced in training and career development.
