We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated consultant to join our screening team to provide strategic and expert leadership to cancer and non-cancer screening programmes across Lothian for a fixed term of six months. The postholder will be part of the Senior Leadership Team within our Healthcare Public Health Division, within the Directorate of Public Health and Health Policy.

Working closely with key stakeholders and clinical colleagues nationally, regionally, and locally you will support the delivery of the national screening programmes and associated pathways at local level, oversee quality and effectiveness, and work to reduce inequalities in uptake. You will be experienced in the management of adverse events and the application of learning for improvement.

The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, management, and expert specialist advice on issues relating to screening and will manage a team of staff working on screening, early detection and tackling inequalities.

Candidates must be included in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice/GDC Specialist List or included in the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists at the point of application. Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register, GDC Specialist List in dental public health or UKPHR must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry to a register at the date of interview.

The successful candidates will be required to be a competent person under the Public Health (Scotland) Act 2008 and participate in the out of hours on-call health protection rota for Lothian (note: this is subject to change as we are planning to move our on-call service to a health protection specialist-led service in early 2025 (date TBC) as the transition to an East Region Health Protection Service concludes). Further details available on enquiry.

The main departmental offices are West Port and Astley Ainsley Hospital, both located in central Edinburgh, with excellent travel links to surrounding areas. NHS Lothian currently operates an agile working model supporting a blend of working at home and days on site each week.

This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who can lead a team, inspire partners, and demonstrate the importance of a health in all policies approach to addressing population health challenges and service redesign.
